The EP/GP Loot System

Cold Comfort uses the EP/GP loot system.

EP/GP is a "relational loot system".  Unlike traditional DKP where you earn a made-up curency and use it to buy gear, EP/GP measures the difference between the effort you've put in (EP) and the gear you've received (GP).

Your EP goes up when you raid and kill bosses.  Your GP goes up when you get gear.  If you divide EP by GP (hence the name), you get your loot priority, or PR.  When loot drops we sort the raid members by PR and the interested member with the highest PR gets it.  This makes their GP go up, which makes their PR go down.

If you want to read more about the EP/GP system, visit http://code.google.com/p/epgp/wiki/TheSystem (http://code.google.com/p/epgp/wiki/TheSystem)

EP/GP has several settings that each guild can tweak.  These are ours:

SettingsValueDescription
BaseGP100Prevents new members having "infinite" PR
MinEP10000Members must earn this much EP before they can declare interest on an item
Decay Rate15The percentage of EP and GP removed each week to discourage camping
EP and GP Decay

Decay reduces your EP and GP by that percentage once per week (on Sunday before the raid).  This doesn't change your PR, because everyone's values change by the same percentage.

Decay serves two purposes: to close the PR gaps between members and discourages taking long breaks after earning a large amount of EP - if you go just four weeks without earning any EP, it will be cut in half when you return.

Loot System by Instance

We do not use EP/GP for all instances, only the "current" content:

InstanceLoot System
Trial of the Crusader 10EP/GP
Trial of the Crusader 25EP/GP
Icecrown Citadel 10EP/GP
Icecrown Citadel 25EP/GP
If we run any other content as a guild, we use straight /roll to decide who gets loot.

As we grow from 10 to 25 person content, we will use EP/GP for the 25 person raids and change the 10 person raids to /roll (if we continue to run them at all).

Earning EP

You earn EP as you raid.  EP is applied immediately, and if you are running the addon you will see your PR change in real time.

AwardAmountNotes
On Time Bonus5000Being ready to pull at the scheduled raid start
Raiding1000Awarded every 15 minutes during raids
Progression Boss Kill5000
Progression Boss Wipe1000Up to a maximum of 3000 EP per boss per raid
Farm Boss Kill1000
Bonus EP

At the raid leader's discretion, EP bonuses may be awarded to specific members who go above and beyond, or to the raid as a whole.  The raid leader may also choose to set a goal for bonus EP, such as completing a full clear within a certain amount of time.

Standby EP

If we have more raiders than we have raid slots, members can earn standby EP by being online and ready to fill in if the raid requires them.  Only members who sit out at the start of a raid get standby EP - if you are late to a raid and your spot is given to someone else you may get in later if a spot opens up, but you earn no standby EP while waiting.

If you are on standby, you get 100% of the time-based EP award.  If you're on standby for three hours, you will get 12000 EP.  You do not get standby EP for boss kills.  You are still eligible for the on-time bonus, even if you are put on standby.

Standby EP is awarded at the end of the raid.

"Earning" GP

You don't really "earn" GP.  Your GP goes up, but that brings your PR down.  It's just the way the math works.  A better word is that GP is "credited" to you.

This image shows the GP value for the Claymore of Ancient Power - look under the "Equip" lines and you'll see the value of 199.  The GP value for an item is calculated based upon its quality (Rare, Epic, Legendary), its item level and the slot it goes in.  All epic 2H Weapons of item level 200 will have a GP value of 199.

When you win an item, your GP will go up by the value in the tooltip, with a few exceptions.

Items with a Secondary Value

The goal of EP/GP is that for every class and spec, a full set of armor and weapons should have about the same GP cost.  Armor is easy - an epic item level 219 headpiece has the same GP value whether it is cloth, leather, mail or plate.

Weapons is where things get a bit harder.  Depending on your class and spec, you will use a variety of weapons, and certain slots will be of more interest to you than others.  For example, a hunter cares much more about their ranged slot than a Paladin does.

To balance things out, items that go in the mainhand, offhand and ranged slots can have two values.  Which value is used to increase your GP depends on your class and spec.  The total GP for main hand + off hand + ranged should be the about the same for everyone within a given loot tier.

The EP/GP addon shows both values in the tooltip for these slots.  The Claymore of Ancient Power in the image above is one of the items - it will increase your GP by 199 or 99 depending on who you are.  This table explains the slots that differ.

Item TypeSpecial CaseSecondary Value
1H WeaponsUsed as an Offhand1/3 the normal GP value
1H WeaponsHunters1/3 the normal GP value
1H WeaponsTanking Weapons1/3 the normal GP value
2H WeaponsUsed as an Offhand (TG Warriors)1/2 the normal GP value
2H WeaponsHunters1/2 the normal GP value
Ranged WeaponsAnyone Except a Hunter1/3 the normal GP value
ShieldsAnything Except Tanking1/3 the normal GP value
For classes where which weapon goes in the off hand is mostly aesthetic (TG warriors and dual-wielding Death Knights), every other weapon won will be 1/2 the GP value.

How you "spend" PR

One of the concepts that people who have used DKP-like systems in the past have trouble with is that there isn't a currency in EP/GP.  With a DKP system, the thing that you earn by raiding (DKP) is the thing that goes down when you get loot.  It's just like a paycheque from which you purchase things that you want.

EP/GP is different.  There's nothing to "spend".  Your EP and GP values only ever go up (except when the decay kicks in).  You don't spend EP in order to get gear.  The only number that matters when it comes to loot is your PR - the other two numbers are just a means to an end.

As you raid, your EP goes up.  Every time that happens, your PR goes up.  When you get gear, your GP will go up, which means your PR will go down.  If you get no loot on a raid, your PR is guaranteed to be higher at the end of the raid than it was at the start.

To see your own PR (including watching it change in real time during a raid), you need to install the EP/GP addon (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/epgp-dkp-reloaded.aspx).  Installing the addon will also let you see the GP value of any item in the tooltip.

Declaring Interest in Loot

When an item drops, the master looter will link the item in raid chat and ask for declarations.

Say one and only one of the following: int or off, like this:

  • int means that the item is an upgrade for your main spec on your main character
  • off means that you are interested in the item for your off spec, your alt, or that the item is a sidegrade

Who gets the loot is decided in this order:

WhoWinner
Guild Members who declare intHighest PR
Outsiders who declare intHighest /roll
Guild Members who declare offHighest PR
Outsiders who declare offHighest /roll
If nobody declares interest in an item, BoPs will be disenchanted and the shards deposited in the guild bank.  BoEs will be sold on the AH.

Outsiders

Notice that outsiders have higher priority for a mainspec item that guild member alts.  This is by design.

The goal of our loot policy is to gear up our main specs.  If your alt or offspec gets gear, that's a bonus.

While we would always prefer to run with a full guild roster, there will be times during our growth that we are a few people short to fill out a raid.  In those cases, we may bring in outsiders.  They should understand that we are there to gear up our guild, but we don't expect them to help for free.  They get second pick on all mainspec items.

Our guild members still have priority over outsiders for offspec.

Loot Etiquette

  • Rule #1: Don't be an asshat
  • Rule #2: see rule #1

You are expected to make informed decisions about loot that benefit the guild.  You are expected to respect your fellow guild members.  Failing to do either is not a strategy for long-term membership in the guild.

No loot system can account for every situation.  The goal here is not to have a loot policy that closes all loopholes.  Rather, the goal is to not have people who would exploit any such loopholes in the guild.  Please conduct yourself accordingly.

All Trial of the Crusader 10Progression
All Trial of the Grand Crusader 10Progression
All Trial of the Crusader 25Progression

Generally, a boss is moved to farm status when it has been killed cleanly three raid cycles in a row.

Trials, Alts, Dual Specs and Sidegrades

Trial Members

If a trial member attends a raid as a member of the guild, they get EP and GP credited as normal and participate in loot just like every other member.

If someone joins our raid as an outsider they /roll for loot as described above.  If we then decide to offer them a trial, they will be credited the EP and GP that they would have received if they were a member.  This prevents an undergeared trial member from receiving a large amount of loot that no main specs wanted, then joining the guild with a GP value of 0.

Alts

When playing an alt in a raid that uses EP/GP, both EP and GP are credited to the main account.  Alts are third on the priority ladder, underneath anyone who would use the item for their main spec.  Anything won by an alt is credited at 10% of the full GP value, regardless of whether it is for the alt's main or secondary spec.

Dual Specs

The guild does not require anyone to purchase dual specs nor to use their second spec for anything specific.

If you choose a second spec that is viable for raiding, you are still expected to show up ready to perform your primary role unless the raid leader asks you to use your secondary spec.  If you are asked to spend all or part of a raid in your second spec, you still get loot priority based upon your main spec.  Anything you do win for your secondary spec is credited at 10% of the full GP value.

Sidegrades

If an item drops that is the same ilevel as the item you're using in that slot, you can declare interest in it as a sidegrade.  Sidegrades are credited at 10% of the full GP value.

Requesting Crystals for Enchants

High-end enchants using Abyss Crystals are available to active members.  The enchant must be for a high-end item that you use for PVE raiding and that you are not going to replace in the near future.

Only the Abyss Crystals are provided; other materials will need to be sourced on your own.

Such requests are generally approved, but certain factors (recent enchants given out, a low inventory of crystals, etc.) may result in you not being able to get the enchant immediately.  There is no GP cost for these enchants.

Crafting Reagents

Crafting reagents have a GP value based on the proportion of the GP value they represent.  For items that are BoE, declarations must be for use in crafting raid items, not to sell.

  • Primordial Saronite: 70 GP (note of the distribution policy with regards to Shadowmourne (#post_nongpitems) below.)
  • Trophy of the Crusade: 165 GP
  • Crusader Orb: 40 GP

back to the table of contents (#post_toc)

Items Without a GP Cost

Recipes

Epic BoP Recipes which create BoE items (such as those that drop in Ulduar or Trial of the Crusader (http://www.wowhead.com/?items=9&filter=qu=4;cr=16:16;crs=4273:4722;crv=0:0;ma=1)) will be given to the member with the highest EP who can learn the pattern.

If epic recipes producing BoP items are added to the game at some point in the future, the recipes will be treated like regular loot with a flat GP value to be determined.

Quest Items

Any quest items, like the [Archivum Data Disc] are distributed by doing a /roll 100 among those who can loot the item.

Mounts

Mounts and other non-performance enhancing items are distributed by doing a /roll 100 among those who can loot the item.

Shadowmourne

Half of the [Primordial Saronite] that drops from raid bosses will be given to the Paladin, Warrior or Death Knight who has the highest EP and has raider rank with the quest The Sacred and the Corrupt (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=24545) in their log.

Once the primary recipient has been selected, that member will continue to receive every other Primordial Saronite that drops so long as they remain at raider rank.  If the current recipient is not present for a drop, a second can be chosen in the same manner.  If more than one recipient is present for a drop, the one who was chosen first has priority.

If no designated recipient is present, all Primordial Saronite drops will be available for declaration as described above (#post_craftingreagents)

Val'anyr, Hammer of Ancient Kings

[Fragment of Val'anyr] will be given to the healer who has the highest EP and has raider rank.  Once the first fragment has been awarded, that member will continue to receive fragments as they drop so long as they remain at raider rank.  If the current fragment recipient is not present for a drop, a second will be chosen in the same manner.  If more than one fragment recipient is present for a drop, the one who was chosen first has priority.
